Just Like the Snow

What a fun snow day! When I went to bed last night, I had no confidence whatsoever that the snowy forecast would be correct. I’m so thankful I was wrong because my girls and I had the best time sledding and building snowmen. It was the perfect ending to their Christmas break from school. As I reflect on the wonderful snow day we experienced together, I am reminded of a passage of Scripture in which snow is compared to God’s Word.

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:10-11).

We are in the very beginning of a brand new year, and I cannot think of a better new year’s resolution than spending concentrated time in the Word. God has promised that – just like the snow – his Word will not return void. It is for our benefit, and the Holy Spirit uses it to transform us more into the image of Christ. All we have to do is read it.

Let’s make Scripture reading a priority this year – and every year. Whether you decide to read through the Bible, read a Psalm a day, or follow some other kind of reading plan, commit to spending time in the Word every day. I was absolutely thrilled when my nine-year-old daughter decided on her own to read through the whole Bible this year. Today is only Day 3 of 2022, but she has been faithful to follow her plan so far. God’s Word does not return void, so I cannot wait to see what the Lord does in her life this year!

Just as the snow falls to the earth providing nutrients to the soil and beauty to the landscape, the Word of God brings nourishment to our souls and beauty to our lives. Read it. Study it. Treasure it. It will not return to the Lord empty.
