In Season (Palm Sunday)

In Christian circles, we often discuss the importance of being ready to share our faith "in season and out of season" (2 Timothy 4:2). I was incredibly blessed this morning to hear an "in season" story in which two friends were able to share the meaning of Palm Sunday with several people at a local restaurant. Sometimes we must intentionally look for opportunities to share what we believe, but many times - like what my friends experienced this morning - those opportunities find us. I'm grateful that my friends were ready.

On any given Sunday morning, you are almost guaranteed to find the same hungry crowd at this particular breakfast joint in town where my friends eat. On this particular Sunday morning, a discussion arose among some of the familiar customers about the meaning of Palm Sunday. One inquisitive person directed a question in my friends' direction. "Hey, you two go to church. What's all this about Palm Sunday?" My friends were then able to share the events of our Lord's triumphal entry into Jerusalem to a restaurant of people who were hungry for more than eggs and waffles. The conversation ended with several of them receiving Gideon Bibles so they could read more for themselves.

We are surrounded by people on a daily basis who have questions big and small. Is there anything about us that would make them think we have the answers? Do our relationships with other people welcome curious questions? Are we ready in season and out of season to share what we believe?

When Jesus entered Jerusalem on that first Palm Sunday, everyone had a very important question. "[T]he whole city was stirred up, saying, 'Who is this?'" (Matthew 21:10). What is our answer to that question? Who is Jesus to us? What can we share about him this season to a world in desperate need of salvation?
